WWF's Living Planet Report 2024 warns about the "catastrophic" decline of species

The Living Planet Report is the flagship publication of the non-governmental organization WWF (World Wide Fund), an international entity dedicated to environmental conservation since 1961.

WWF has recently presented the 2024 edition of this report, which is updated every two years and can be accessed and downloaded on the project's website. It is a "comprehensive study of global biodiversity trends and the planet's health."

According to the presentation of the Living Planet Report 2024, this work "provides scientific evidence to support what nature has been repeatedly demonstrating: unsustainable human activity is pushing the world's natural systems, which sustain all life on Earth, towards catastrophic and potentially irreversible tipping points." Thus, the Living Planet Index (LPI), provided by the Zoological Society of London, shows a 73% decline in the average sizes of nearly 35,000 wildlife populations across 5,495 species (mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians) between 1970 and 2020.

The report "calls on world leaders, governments, private sector, and civil society to accompany their ambition with concrete actions that are up to the challenge, fulfilling their commitments to ensure a healthy, sustainable, and equitable future for people and the planet."

Reddit, a giant of online conversation

With almost 100 million daily active users -after increasing nearly 50% during the last year- and more than 100,000 thematic communities, Reddit is one of the most relevant digital platforms among internet users, who use the platform to discover and share interesting content about all types of topics.

Founded in 2005, Reddit began trading on the stock market in March 2024. Its third quarter 2024 results showed its first profits, with revenue of 348.4 million dollars and a net profit of 29.8 million thanks, in part, to agreements signed with Google and OpenAI for content licensing.

Reddit allows registered users to publish and share content -texts, images, links, or videos- to talk and debate about practically any topic, and they can also comment on publications made by other users and vote in favor (upvotes) or against (downvotes) them. Publications with more positive votes gain more visibility on the platform.

Reddit is organized in "subreddits," which are communities dedicated to specific topics. There are communities about practically any topic. For example, r/books for books, r/travel for travels, r/funny for humor content, or r/science for science, which are among the communities with the most users.

Users can subscribe to the subreddits that interest them most so that this content appears highlighted in their space. Reddit users accumulate "karma" based on the votes their publications and comments receive.
