Walmart and Amazon Top the Fortune 500 List of America's Largest Companies

Fortune magazine has just published its famous Fortune 500 ranking of the 500 largest U.S. companies by revenue. This marks the 71st edition of the list.

The 500 companies featured in the ranking account for two-thirds of the United States' GDP with a total of $19.9 trillion in revenue. These companies employ 31 million people worldwide. Last year, their combined profits reached $1.87 trillion, 10% more than the previous year.

This year's list is topped, once again—making it 13 consecutive years—by retail chain Walmart, the world's largest with its brick-and-mortar stores and online commerce, with total revenue of $681 billion.

Second place goes to e-commerce giant Amazon, which has come closer than ever to Walmart's revenue: falling short by just $43 billion.

Healthcare and insurance company UnitedHealth Group takes third place, ahead of Apple, which ranks fourth, and pharmacy and retail chain CVS Health, fifth in the ranking.

Spain, World Leader in Organ Transplants

This Friday, June 6, marks World Transplant Patient Day celebrated worldwide.

This is a day aimed at raising public awareness about the importance of organ and tissue donation to improve quality of life and save the lives of people suffering from chronic or terminal illnesses.

Events organized for this world day seek to promote a culture of donation and knowledge about transplants, as well as recognize transplant patients, donors, and their families alike.

This same week, on Wednesday, June 4, Spain celebrated its National Donor Day. Spain is the world's leading country in transplants. In fact, it has held this position consecutively for the past 33 years.

In 2024, Spain performed a total of 6,464 organ transplants, 10% more than the previous year, and the donor rate per million inhabitants reached 52.6, the highest in the world, according to data from the National Transplant Organization. During the past year, a total of 2,562 people in Spain donated their organs after death.

The second-ranking country worldwide in donor percentage is the United States: 48.1 donors per million inhabitants. The European average rate is 22.9 donors per million inhabitants.

The following chart shows the ten countries with the highest proportion of donors in the world in 2023, when Spain had not yet surpassed the rate of 50 donors per million inhabitants, a goal achieved in 2024.
