Updated Ranking of Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps

Tech-focused venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz has released the fourth edition of its report ranking the world's top 100 generative artificial intelligence applications.

The AI landscape has transformed dramatically in the past six months, notably with the emergence of Chinese generative AI platform DeepSeek, which has rapidly established itself as one of ChatGPT's primary competitors.

The comprehensive report details user adoption rates and revenue generation across AI applications, along with other key metrics.

The analysis presents two biannual rankings: the top 50 AI web products for consumers (tracked through Similarweb monthly visits) and the top 50 AI mobile apps (measured via Sensor Tower). This latest edition features 17 newcomers in the web products category.

In the AI web products category, ChatGPT, DeepSeek, Character.ai, Perplexity, and JanitorAI claim the top spots. Meanwhile, ChatGPT, Nova AI Chatbot, Microsoft Edge, Baidu AI Search, and Photomath lead the mobile apps ranking.

The report offers an in-depth examination of generative AI tool development and includes direct links to all tools featured in the top 100 ranking.

Smashing: the news app that blends AI with expert curation

Smashing, a news app launched recently by Goodreads co-founder Otis Chandler, combines artificial intelligence with expert curation to deliver personalized news recommendations.

The app's standout feature, AI Questions, enriches news stories by providing additional context and diverse perspectives on the content.

Using AI technology, Smashing analyzes news websites and integrates community curation to create tailored recommendations based on each user's interests.

Users can organize their content by creating separate "feeds" for different topics.

Currently, Smashing is exclusively available on the App Store for Apple devices.

The platform demonstrates an effective fusion of AI capabilities and human expertise in news curation.

Google launches experimental AI Mode: a new way to show search results

Google announced this week the experimental launch of AI Mode, a new search mode that expands the capabilities offered by AI Overview by being able to respond, using AI and in a conversational manner, to advanced questions of any kind.

Google says that "this new search mode expands what AI Overview can do with more advanced reasoning, thinking, and multimodal capabilities so you can get help even with your toughest questions. You can ask anything that's on your mind and get a helpful AI-powered response with the ability to go further with follow-up questions and useful web links".

Google has also explained that it is opening the AI Overviews service to more users, which offers responses through generative AI to users' questions and queries. According to Google, there are already more than 1 billion people using AI Overviews.

Google has said that the new AI Mode responds to users' requests for this type of AI-facilitated responses. For now, the service will open, by invitation, to Google One AI Premium subscribers so they can test it.

This new way of displaying responses, currently in an experimental phase, completely breaks away from the traditional results page traditionally offered by Google.
