UNESCO Celebrates World Book and Copyright Day

Yesterday, April 23, the world celebrated World Book and Copyright Day, as designated by UNESCO.

This is how UNESCO presents the occasion:

A celebration of the power of books
Books are like a window onto another world – with each new page, they introduce us to new people, new cultures and new ideas. Every year, on 23 April, UNESCO celebrates World Book and Copyright Day in recognition of the power of books as a bridge between generations and across cultures.

UNESCO

The goal of this celebration is to promote reading, boost the publishing industry, and defend intellectual property through copyright protection.

Every year since 2001, UNESCO has designated a city as the World Book Capital. Madrid (Spain) was the first city to hold this title. Rabat (Morocco) has just launched its year of activities as the 2026 World Book Capital. And UNESCO announced a few weeks ago that in 2027, the World Book Capital will be the Colombian city of Medellín.

Cities designated as World Book Capital by UNESCO "undertake to promote books and reading for all ages and groups, within and across national borders, and to organize a programme of activities for the year," UNESCO explains.

Improve Your English Vocabulary with The New York Times

The New York Times features a section called "Word of the Day”.

The goal of this section, produced by The Learning Network — the NYT's educational service — is to help readers improve their English vocabulary with a daily word and other learning resources.

  • Word of the Day — Words of the Day and other teaching resources to learn vocabulary with The New York Times.

For each word, the section indicates how many times it has appeared in The New York Times over the past year, provides its definition and pronunciation, explains its usage, and invites readers to use it in a sentence.

This service, developed with the support of Vocabulary.com, is also available in Spanish.

🤔 Express Quiz

Access Now and the #KeepItOn coalition publish an annual report denouncing internet shutdowns ordered by governments and authorities around the world, particularly during conflicts, protests, wars, or humanitarian crises.

In the previous edition of "On the Net Today," we asked about the essential features of Web 2.0. The correct answer was: "Focus on active participation and user-generated content."

  • Name: Paula Ramisa

  • Position: Co-founder, Creative Director and Designer at Roda Studio

  • Recommended resource: Landbook

  • Why?

Landbook is a curated archive of beautifully designed landing pages and websites, selected with a sharp eye. What makes it stand out is that it's not the typical chaotic site where everything is thrown together: here, everything you see works. It covers websites from every sector and every type imaginable. It helps you understand how websites are being built right now — from structure to visual style and animations.

When we're working on a website project, it's one of the first places we open to browse references and find inspiration. We also pick up animation ideas there. Having great references, in this field, is everything: it opens your mind, gets you out of the predictable, and helps you approach projects with sharper judgment while staying open to what's happening out there.
