The Economist's Resilient Cities Index

Economist Impact Index Website

What innovative strategies can be followed to build resilient cities and ensure a sustainable future for all?

Economist Impact, the think tank of The Economist Group, has developed a Resilient Cities Index featuring 25 cities worldwide. The index evaluates and measures four fundamental pillars: critical infrastructure, environment, socio-institutional status, and economic status.

Economist Impact defines urban resilience as “the capacity of a city to avoid, withstand, and recover from crises and long-term stresses. A resilient city should be able to self-organize after a disruption, adapt to risks, and plan ahead rather than react.”

Among the 25 cities analyzed, the five most resilient cities are:

  1. New York

  2. Los Angeles

  3. London

  4. Singapore

  5. Paris

Barcelona ranks ninth, behind Tokyo and ahead of Munich.
