MIT Study warns about brain effects from using generative AI in essay writing

A study recently published by MIT's Media Lab warns about "the long-term educational implications" of dependence on generative artificial intelligence tools and emphasizes "the need for further research into AI's role in learning."

The study, conducted over four months, explored the neurological and behavioral consequences of essay writing assisted by AI tools like ChatGPT.

To conduct the study, participants were divided into three groups: those who used AI tools for essay writing, those who used a search engine like Google, and those who relied solely on their brains, without any tool support.

The results show that users of generative AI tools "consistently achieved inferior outcomes at neurological, linguistic, and behavioral levels."

The study is part of MIT Media Lab's "Your Brain on ChatGPT" project.
