📷 The 2026 World Press Photo Contest winners are announced

World Press Photo announced this Thursday, April 9, 2026, the winners of the 2026 World Press Photo Contest, presenting outstanding work from photojournalists and documentary photographers worldwide, connecting global audiences to the most pressing stories of our time.
Selected from 57,376 photographs submitted by 3,747 photographers across 141 countries, this year’s winners reflect a wide range of perspectives and experiences. Among the awarded works are stories that have shaped headlines, alongside those that have gone largely unseen; spanning conflict and crisis, as well as resilience, resistance, and cultural traditions.
The jury chair, Kira Pollack, stated: “This is a critical moment — for democracy, for truth, for the question of what we as a society are willing to see and call out and what we are willing to ignore. The photographers recognized here have done their part. They have made the record. Now it is our turn to look.”
The full collection of awarded photos and stories is available on the World Press Photo website.
The 2026 World Press Photo of the Year winner and two finalists will be announced on April 23, 2026 at 11:00am CEST (Amsterdam time).

🤖 Meta relaunches its AI with the Muse Spark model

Meta, the company behind Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and WhatsApp, has announced this week its new artificial intelligence model, called Muse Spark, developed specifically for its products.
Meta states that “Muse Spark is our most powerful model yet.” Mark Zuckerberg’s company has explained that Muse Spark “currently powers the Meta AI app and website, and will be rolling out to WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, and AI glasses in the coming weeks.”
Meta has said that “we are on our way to personal superintelligence: an assistant that can help anyone, anywhere with the things that matter most to them.”
The company cited the following example of how the model works: “Whether you need a quick answer or help with complex problems that need strong reasoning, Meta AI now handles both. You can switch between modes depending on the task, and Meta AI can launch multiple subagents in parallel to tackle your question. Like planning a family trip to Florida where one agent drafts the itinerary, another compares Orlando vs. the Keys, and a third finds kid-friendly activities — all at the same time, giving you a better answer, faster.”

In the early days of the internet, AOL was one of the defining symbols of home internet access.
What phrase became a cultural hallmark of AOL?
In the previous edition of “On the Net Today” we asked whether it was true or false that the Webby Awards are known for limiting acceptance speeches to just five words. And indeed: winners can only say five words when accepting their award.

Why?
Claude has become my strategic ally in project management and communications consulting. Working at an NGO means constantly facing limited resources and technical capacity, which makes efficiency an absolute priority. As a project manager, I use this tool to connect my day-to-day apps — Drive, Notion, and Asana — and centralize information in one place. What truly makes the difference is its ability to process historical data: I can integrate past social media and newsletter reports to generate in-depth analysis in seconds.
This allows me to overcome resource constraints, spending less time on operational tasks and focusing instead on adding strategic value — analyzing trends and optimizing our communications with real data, without compromising my capacity.
