Roland Garros · NASA+ · Letters from an American: history behind US politics
June 5, 2024 edition
Good morning:
We're halfway through the week! This is 'On the Net Today' – your go-to newsletter for maximizing your internet experience! Three times a week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) we curate a selection of three valuable resources to enhance your browsing time.
Here are three recommendations we've prepared for today:
Roland Garros: The best clay court tournament in the world
Cover of the official Roland Garros website
This weekend, the women's and men's finals of Roland Garros, one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, will be played in Paris.
The official Roland Garros website is a comprehensive source of information that offers not only live information on all matches but also several videos with summaries of the most outstanding matches or press conferences of the players, among other content.
In addition, tennis fans will also find extensive summaries of classic matches that have gone down in the history of the tournament or reports on the great stars of Roland Garros. Here are just three examples:
The quarterfinal match between Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic in 2022
And another epic semifinal, played by these same players in 2013
Or, many years before, the 1984 final between Ivan Lendl and John McEnroe

And a bonus related to the surface on which this tennis tournament is played: this original interactive published last year by The New York Times on what happens on the clay court during a match:

NASA+: Live and on-demand videos from NASA
NASA+ is a new ad-free, no-cost, family-friendly streaming service that embeds you into NASA’s missions through new original video series.
The videos are organized by topic or by series, and there is also a space for live events.
For example, today, June 5th, the live broadcast of the launch of the first crewed mission of Boeing's Starliner spacecraft to the International Space Station is scheduled. The launch had to be suspended at the last minute last Saturday due to a technical problem.

Letters from an American: the newsletter that tells the history behind US politics
"Letters from an American" is one of the most popular personal newsletters on the internet. Written by Heather Cox Richardson, a professor of American history at Boston College, it offers a daily article, sent at the end of the day, about the history behind US politics.
"To understand the present, we have to understand how we got here," says the author in the introduction to her newsletter. According to her, the newsletter "is a chronicle of the current political scene, but since you can't understand today's politics without an outline of the Constitution, and the laws, and the economy, and the social customs of the United States, this newsletter explores what it means, and what it has meant, to be American."
More than 1.4 million people receive "Letters from an American" in their email inboxes. Additionally, since last February, the author has also been offering a podcast of the newsletter with her own narration of the published articles.
She is the author of, among others, the recent book "Democracy Awakening: Notes on the State of America".
