OpenAI launches ChatGPT Search, its AI-powered web search engine

The generative artificial intelligence company OpenAI announced this Thursday the launch of its web search engine ChatGPT Search, which performs real-time internet queries and provides links to web sources it considers relevant, similar to Google and other search engines. ChatGPT Search includes news, stock quotes, and sports results in its responses.

The system works as follows. When a user asks a question in ChatGPT, the tool detects if that query might require recent information and activates the search function instead of solely using its stored knowledge.

Thus, it performs a real-time web search to locate the most relevant sources, analyzes and summarizes the found information, which it presents to the user in a conversational manner citing the main sources so the user can access them if desired.

Users of ChatGPT's advanced options can manually select the new ChatGPT Search option. The search engine will be made available to all free ChatGPT users over the coming months.

With ChatGPT Search, OpenAI joins giants like Google or Microsoft, and startups like Perplexity, which also offer real-time AI-powered search engines that function as chatbots that dialogue with the user.
