Op-Docs, the award-winning independent documentary section of the NYT

As part of its broad video editorial offering, The New York Times has featured for years the Op-Docs section, a space dedicated to presenting short documentary films by different independent authors covering a wide variety of topics.

Many of these works have been awarded. Notable among them are the documentary short "The Queen of Basketball," which won an Oscar in 2022, or "Island in Between," a finalist at this year's 2024 Oscar Awards.

This week, Op-Docs has released a new documentary short, "Instruments of a Beating Heart," which will attempt to compete for the Oscar in 2025 in the corresponding category. The work, available for free, offers an uncommon look into the Japanese school system.

Op-Docs is part of The New York Times Opinion section's video team. It offers more than 400 short films that have been selected from works created by both renowned filmmakers and emerging authors. These documentaries have sparked global debates, influenced national policies, and achieved numerous distinctions, including Emmy Awards, Peabody Awards, and the aforementioned Oscar.

The most notable lists of 2024 can be found in the Explore tab of Apple Podcasts. Rankings are provided for top podcasts, the most popular debuts of this year, podcasts with the most followers, most shared shows and episodes, and the most successful free and subscription channels.

Additionally, in 15 countries, a selection of episode series and narratives that have generated the most interest among listeners throughout 2024 is displayed.

To view rankings from different countries, users are offered the option to change their geographic area. For example, here is the link for Spain's most notable podcasts of the year.
