⚽️ Google recreates Pelé’s ‘greatest’ goal via AI

On August 2, 1959, Pelé scored the most beautiful goal of his career: three consecutive "sombreros" over defenders and the goalkeeper, without the ball ever touching the ground, finishing with a header. It happened during a match between Juventus de Mooca and Santos, Pelé's team, at Estádio Rua Javari in the Mooca neighborhood of São Paulo, Brazil.

The problem is that the goal — known as the "Gol da Rua Javari" — was never filmed. Only a single photo of the final header exists; the extraordinary play itself has never been seen on video... until now.

Google DeepMind, working with Pelé Brand (the official managers of Pelé's legacy, under NR Sports), historians, sports journalists and football legends, has reconstructed that memorable moment for the world to see. The reconstruction is now on display at the Pelé Museum in Santos, Brazil.

According to Google, the team used AI models including Gemini Omni and Veo to turn historical fragments into moving images, filmed on the original pitch with authentic period uniforms and a vintage ball.

For over 60 years the legendary goal lived only in the memory of the fans who were there. The project is presented as a mini-documentary featuring interviews with historians, journalists, Pelé's family, eyewitnesses and football legends. As Pelé's daughter, Flávia Kurtz, put it: "He would be so proud to see all this happening."

📧 "The Good List": The New York Times' newsletter of recommendations "to add joy to you”

Every week, The New York Times publishes "The Good List" for free — a weekly newsletter designed to bring joy and meaning to readers' days.

It's a newsletter we're especially fond of at "On the Net Today," since it shares a similar goal to ours: surfacing things that can enrich our online experience, and by extension our lives, in one way or another.

It's written by Melissa Kirsch, the Times journalist who also writes the Saturday edition of another highly recommended Times newsletter, "The Morning."

👩‍💻 Beehiiv rolls out major platform upgrades — now including a community feature

Beehiiv, the platform we use to publish "On the Net Today," unveiled major new features this Thursday at the beehiiv Summer Release Event 2026, streamed on YouTube.

Beehiiv co-founder and CEO Tyler Denk didn't hold back, framing the announcements as a major turning point for the company. As he put it, describing where beehiiv is headed: "This is what changes your mind" for creators not yet building on the platform, and for those already on it, "this takes you to another level."

Here are the main new features, as summarized in Denk's own recap thread:

  • Launch of Community, a new offering that joins beehiiv's existing newsletter, podcast, website, products, ads and subscriptions services — together making up beehiiv's full editorial proposition for content creators.

Community lets each newsletter create a space where readers can connect with the author(s) and with each other. It includes posts and threads, channels to organize conversations, comments, reactions and more.

Like most beehiiv services, this is available to publishers on a paid beehiiv plan (a flat monthly or annual fee). One advantage beehiiv offers over other platforms is that it doesn't charge platform fees on top for things like digital product sales or paid subscriptions.

  • Copilot: an AI assistant that helps improve any aspect of your newsletter.

  • Podcasts: improvements to the podcast service, which lets you host, distribute and monetize a podcast from the same platform.

  • Visual editor: improvements to beehiiv's editor, offering an exact preview of your content and real-time collaborative editing, among other features.

  • Programmatic advertising: a new way to earn ad revenue through beehiiv's Ad Network.

  • Paid subscriptions: a complete solution for managing paid subscriptions, including group subscriptions, metered paywalls, free and paid trials, discounts and promotions, multiple pricing tiers, and donations.

  • Website builder: AI-assisted tools for building your newsletter's website, bringing together every product and service beehiiv offers creators.

⏭️ In Brief

  • Recommended resource: Branding Style Guides

  • Why?:

One of the best collections of brand guidelines from some of the world's top organizations. If you work in design or simply have an interest in branding, this is one of those websites I always recommend bookmarking. I find it an excellent source for discovering how major brands build and document their visual and verbal identity. Being able to browse their brand guidelines is a very practical way to learn and find inspiration for new projects. On top of that, everything is organized in a simple way, and the catalog keeps growing thanks to contributions from the community. It's a resource I come back to often when I need quality references. A small pocket of the internet from a couple of decades ago. Essential.
