Google Arts & Culture unveils an incredible revamped app for enjoying art and culture

To mark the project's 15th anniversary, Google has completely redesigned the Google Arts & Culture app, which brings together material from more than 3,000 cultural institutions and artists in more than 90 countries.
This video introduces the new app:
The revamped app comes with several new features worth highlighting:
Conversational, visual search. This is the app's headline feature. Google explains that you can ask any question about arts and culture in natural language and get an answer that "pairs insightful explanations with visuals and curated stories from partner archives." Anything from Caravaggio's chiaroscuro, impressionist museums in Paris or images captured by the Webb telescope to cats in art.
Chrono Look, a new AI experiment that lets you virtually try on historical attire from different eras and regions.
Dial-an-Artist, which lets you hold simulated conversations with historical artists about their work and careers.
A new City Guide, expanded with 27 new destinations, which combines cultural landmarks with real-time events.
A completely redesigned homepage, conceived as a feed for daily discovery: bite-sized stories, highlights, interactive experiences, exhibitions near you and cultural trends.

Follow the Nautilus Live expedition in the Hawaiian Islands in real time

The Nautilus Live expedition, run by the Ocean Exploration Trust (OET), is a deep-sea exploration program aboard the research vessel E/V Nautilus.
What sets this expedition apart is that it streams live online, 24 hours a day, showing footage of the ocean floor and other aspects of the expedition, with live commentary from the science team.
This allows scientists, students and the general public to watch video and receive real-time data from the dives of the remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). The expedition's aim is to explore unknown regions of the seafloor.
Ocean Exploration Trust is an organization founded in 2008 by explorer Robert Ballard, best known for finding the Titanic. One of its goals is to inspire new generations in science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics (STEAM), so it brings educators and students aboard as part of its crew.
These days, Nautilus Live is exploring the area around the Hawaiian Islands. It will continue until October 12, when the expedition that began on September 22 comes to an end.
Beyond the live footage, the expedition is also archiving highlight videos, like this one:

A spectacular bird photography gallery from Audubon magazine

If you love photography, and bird photography in particular, you're really going to enjoy the special feature Audubon magazine has put together with the hundred best images from its annual contests.
The feature stands out not only for the quality of the photographs, taken by photographers from the United States, Canada, Chile and Colombia, but also for the careful, elegant and functional digital presentation created by this bird-focused magazine.
The images can be viewed at large size and come with their technical details and the story of how each shot was taken.
Also available, in a similar presentation, are the winning photographs and the honorable mentions from the 2026 Audubon Photography Awards.

⏭️ In Brief
Relief:World is a spectacular interactive elevation map of the entire world that you can explore by zooming and panning to any point on the planet. What sets this map apart is that, rather than applying the same color scale to the whole globe, it recalculates the color palette based on the elevation range of the area you're looking at at any given moment.

If you're curious about some of the limitations of AI, you'll enjoy this instructive article by journalist and writer Aatish Bhatia, who specializes in science and in explaining complex ideas in simple ways. In it, Bhatia offers a visual, interactive and highly educational demonstration of a key idea about generative AI: a system can perform extraordinarily well on complex tasks and yet fail confidently on seemingly trivial ones. He does this using the classic 15-tile sliding puzzle as a controlled experiment.
Will these be the leaders of the future? TIME magazine thinks so. It presents them in its special list TIME100 Next 2026: The World's Most Influential Rising Stars - TIME's annual list features leaders who are shaping the future

Why?:
An independent geopolitics outlet, and I'm subscribed to its weekly newsletter. I recommend it because it gets straight to the point on geopolitics. They turn complex phenomena into concrete, objective data, maps and infographics that show at a glance who has what, where, and how the board is shifting.
And if you want to dig deeper, take a look at their full weekly reports. This week's covers how drone technology is changing the war between Russia and Ukraine.
