Do I live in a "15-minute city"? This interactive map shows you

The "15-minute city" is a concept that advocates for the need to conceive cities to be compact, so that their citizens could satisfy their personal needs by traveling no more than 15 minutes away from their home by bike or on foot. These needs should include goods, work, sport and cultural activities.

This would help increase the quality of life for inhabitants, decrease CO2 emissions, reduce traffic, and decongest public transportation, according to the proponents of this idea.

What is the current reality? The 15 min City platform offers a tool that allows you to discover and visualize on a map the situation in urban areas around the world: what activities or places are accessible, and at what distance, on foot or by bicycle. A search engine allows users to go directly to the city of their interest.

The activities taken into account for the analysis are the following:

  • Outside activities: parks, walks, picnics...

  • Learning: schools, universities...

  • Supplies: supermarkets, grocery stores…

  • Eating: restaurant, bistros, cafes...

  • Moving: bus stations, train stations, taxis...

  • Cultural Activities: museums, theatres, cinemas...

  • Physical Exercise: Gyms, Sports Centers...

  • Services: offices, banks, post office, town halls...

  • Healthcare: hospitals, doctors, pharmacies...

The project is driven bySony Computer Science Laboratories in Rome.

DyslexicU, free online university of dyslexic thinking

The charity organization Made by Dislexia, in collaboration with The Open University, has just launched DyslexicU, the University of Dyslexic Thinking, where the skills of dyslexic thinking are taught for free via the internet.

The promoters of this educational project, among whom is the entrepreneur Richard Branson, founder of Virgin, consider that the dyslexic thinking skills taught in their courses represent "the intelligence that the world needs now,", “As AI revolutionizes the type of thinking that’s critical for success today, new research featured in our Intelligence 5.0 report finds that human skills such as lateral thinking, complex problem-solving and interpersonal skills are now the most sought-after in every sector, worldwide.”

Among these skills, lateral thinking, the ability to solve complex problems, or personal communication skills are mentioned, which are increasingly in demand by companies, according to the creators of DyslexicU.

Each thematic course is one hour long. Registration is free.

This is the introductory video for DyslexicU featuring Richard Branson, which mentions great creators and innovators who were dyslexic, such as Pablo Picasso, Agatha Christie, or Steve Jobs, among others.
