10 Breakthrough Technologies of 2025, according to MIT Technology Review

MIT Technology Review has been publishing an annual list of the world's 10 most innovative emerging technologies for 24 years.

The magazine's team of journalists and editors selects these technologies from those that have achieved significant progress or reached a major milestone during the past year and are considered to potentially have a great impact in the future.

These are the 10 technologies selected this year:

  • The Vera C. Rubin Observatory, a new telescope that will be launched this year in a remote region of Chile and will conduct a ten-year survey of the southern sky. It contains "the largest digital camera ever built for astronomy"

  • Generative AI search, which "promises to simplify and streamline searches" with its ability to summarize information from many online sources to provide a single answer. This could mean "the end of traditional search engines and the rise of AI personal assistants."

  • Small language models, "cheaper and less energy-consuming," which can now compete with large language models for specific tasks.

  • Cattle burping remedies to reduce the amount of methane they emit.

  • Robotaxis, which after years of testing, are now available to the public in more than a dozen cities worldwide.

  • Cleaner jet fuels that have been in development for years and could become a big business.

  • Fast-learning robots. Thanks to generative AI, "we're getting closer to general-purpose robots that could enter new environments and perform a wide variety of tasks on our behalf, almost instantly."

  • Long-acting HIV prevention meds that could end AIDS once and for all.

  • Green steel. Next year could see the launch of the first industrial green steel plant, using hydrogen produced with renewable energy.

  • Stem cell therapies that work. "Experimental transplants of laboratory-made cells appear to be helping treat two very different diseases: epilepsy and type 1 diabetes."

Webby Awards create a new category to honor Digital Creators

This coming Friday, February 7, 2025, marks the deadline for submissions to the 29th edition of the Webby Awards, considered the most prestigious awards on the internet.

One of this year's main innovations is the inclusion of a new major category dedicated to honoring digital creators or influencers.

These are the generic categories for this year's Webby Awards, with Creators being the new addition:

Within the "Creators" category, awards will be given to individual creators in 15 different thematic categories (Comedy, Fashion and Beauty, Fitness, Health and Wellness, Music, News and Politics, Social Impact, or Sports, among others) and to creative excellence in 11 different areas (best engagement, best deal or collaboration, best editing, best long-form video, best narrative, storytelling or writing, best short video, best tutorial, or most viral).

Prodigioso Volcán presents 9 key insights on digital product creation in 2025

The consulting firm Prodigioso Volcán has published an interactive special titled "El producto infinito” (The Infinite Product) which presents the key factors for this year 2025 related to digital product design and strategy.

The report's authors have identified "the main lines of action that will be worked on in areas as diverse as sustainability, communication, marketing, human resources, product, or innovation."

These are the nine factors selected and explained in the interactive special, with practical cases and examples for each of them:

In the presentation of this work, it is explained that "in this document, we synthesize findings and collect practices that we find interesting. Not as univocal paths, but as factors that influence or condition any initiative or plan to design and launch a digital product. Not as trends, but as practices that often are part of day-to-day operations."

If you are involved in digital product creation in any way, at "Hoy en internet" we believe this interactive document can be very useful for you.
